Growing our local economy is vital, and I’m 100% committed to making sure that people know Victoria is “Open For Business”. After all, when everyone does better…everyone does better.
If you’ve worked on a farm or ranch, you know there’s no substitute for hard work and persistence…and that it’s best to make hay while the sun shines. I view serving our city in much the same way.
As Mayor, I’ll work to address the root causes of our city’s problems, because just putting Band-Aids on bullet holes really doesn’t do much good.
We need to build a strong and diversified economy in Victoria so our local high school and college graduates won’t be constantly moving away to find good jobs and careers elsewhere.
Using tax abatements to bring new companies to Victoria is one tool in our toolbox, not the whole toolkit. I have real problems with giving away things including tax abatements that don’t create a win-win for our city.
We’ve seen the instability and headaches that can come with relying heavily on one major industry or employer for prosperity, so we need to push hard to diversify our local economy.
I want to hit the ground running as Mayor and start getting things done. It’s time to take the bull by the horns and stop kicking the can down the road.
We should emphasize the flexibility and resources we have here and make it known far and wide that our city has a friendly attitude toward businesses large and small.
